Hello friends,
best wishes to all of you. In today’s short article I would like to present you German learning as a consistent and creative process, that always generates new ideas. Despite it is sufficient to learn foreign languages in accordance to the learning plan, still real-life situations go far beyond the limit of standard vocabulary.
That’s why we have to put a focus on tiny details in each scenario. Let’s continue our German learning by making a brief overview of YouTube comments. I am quite sure, you’ll find them engrossing. So, now it’s your turn.
Comments on YouTube comments🙂
- Der Hund ist dort begraben wo auch der Hase im Pfeffer liegt und des Pudels Kern ist.
Der Hund liegt begraben = der Hase liegt im Pfeffer = des Pudels Kern have similar meaning “most important, central point of an issue”. The author managed to successfully combine three expressions in one sentence.
- Das hat mich besonders angesprochen !! Mach weiter! – That really appealed to me!! Keep it up!
Verb “ansprechen” has few meanings such as “to make impression”, “to attract” or “to raise attention”.
- 2 Freunde und die seit bald über 30 Jahren und die genügen mir völlig – Two friends, and we’ve known each other for more than 30 years, and that’s sufficient for me.
seit über 30 Jahren is for over 30 years. When you add “bald“, e.g. seit bald über 30 Jahren means soon it will be more than 30 years people know each other. How many years 31, 32, etc. doesn’t matter.
- Ihr lieben, wozu braucht man ein Taxi in Köln? Die Straßen- und U-Bahnen sind großartig, schnell und klimafreundlich 🙂 – Dear friends, why would you need a taxi in Cologne? The trams and subways are fantastic, fast, and climate-friendly.
Die Straßenbahnen sind großartig (superb, wonderful) und klimafreundlich (they dont’ damage the environment). Hence they are “friends” of the climate:)
- Ironischerweise schaue ich das Video gerade biertrinkend auf der Terrasse der enteigneten Burg Rheinstein. Prost Männer. – Ironically, I’m watching the video right now while drinking beer on the terrace of the expropriated Rheinstein Castle. Cheers, guys.
Ich schaue das Video biertrinkend (Partizip I) – I am watching the video and at the same time drink beer. Partizip 1 examples winkend, lachend, singend.
Where? – Auf der (Dativ) Terrasse der Burg (Burg, die – in Genetiv it becomes der Burg).

- Interessant: Tiefgekühlten Fisch kurz in der Pfanne anzubraten gilt in Deutschland bereits als „frisch zubereitet“. Offenbar wird der Begriff „frisch“ recht großzügig ausgelegt… – Interesting: In Germany, briefly frying frozen fish in the pan is already considered to be ‘freshly prepared’. Apparently, the term ‘fresh’ is quite broadly interpreted.
den Fisch (or something else ) in der Pfrane braten – to fry fish in the pan. Akkusativ case is applied.
Verb “auslegen” means to interpret, to explain, to present.
- Ich bin vor 13 Jahren nach Paraguay ausgewandert, aller Anfang war schwer, aber heute sage ich es war die beste Entscheidung meines Lebens.
Aller Anfang ist schwer is a fixed expression, that considers the difficulties from the beginning as a natural process. Die Entscheidung is a decision. – sich für etwas entscheiden is a reflexive verb, that always requires Akkusativ case.
- Wer nicht in meinen Schuhen gelaufen ist, muss meinen Weg nicht verstehen. Ich genieße mein Leben trotzdem seit über 20 Jahren. – Anyone who hasn’t walked in my shoes doesn’t have to understand my path. I have still been enjoying my life for over 20 years.
in den Schuhen laufen – to walk in someone’s shoes, to go similar way or to have similar experience. Das Leben genießen (also requires Akkusativ) is to celebrate, enjoy life. And what about you, friends? Do you also celebrate your life? – Genießt Ihr auch das Leben?
- Ich bin auch Multimilliardär, aber benutze ausschließlich Pseudonyme und niemand kennt mich, das wird auch für immer so bleiben. 🙂 – I am a multi-billionaire too, but I only use pseudonyms and nobody knows who I am – and it’ll stay that way forever. 🙂
das Pseudonym (singular) – die Pseudonyme (plural). In Akkusativ the definite article with neuter gender (das) doesn’t change, which simplifies our learning to some degree:).
Ich kenne dich, ihn, sie, es. – I know you, him, her, it. If you put adverb “nicht” at the end, then you get a negation, for instance, Ich kenne dich nicht. – I don’t know you. Niemand – nobody.

- Wie immer in Deutschland, unnötig viel Aufwand, für etwas das auch kleiner gehen würde. Perfekt! – As always in Germany, unnecessary effort for something that could be done on a smaller scale. Perfect!
der Aufwand (singular) – die Aufwände (plural) – expenses, efforts. Verb “aufwenden” – to spend, to expend, for example Energie, Kraft, Zeit und Mühe aufwenden. – To expend energy, strength, time and effort.
- Die Speicherstadt und der Freihafen wurden gebraucht, weil Hamburg Teil des neuen Deutschen Reiches wurde. Der unabhängige, zollfreie Handel in Hamburg passte nicht in das Reich, also war der Freihafen ein Kompromiss. – The Speicherstadt (warehouse district) and Freihafen (free port) were needed because Hamburg became part of the new German Empire. Hamburg’s independent, duty-free trade didn’t fit into the empire, so free port was a compromise.
unabhängig – independent, zollfrei – duty-free, der Zoll – toll, customs (singular) – die Zölle – the customs – plural. Also with particle -frei we can build dozens of adjectives, such as fettfrei – fat-free; zuckerfrei – sugar-free; schmerzfrei – pain-free; laktosefrei – lactose-free, etc.
- Schönes und lehrreiches Video! Sehr gut mit angenehmer Stimme mit viel Sachwissen gesprochen! Dazu herrliche Luftaufnahmen vieler Naturlandschaften und auch Gebäuden. – Lovely and informative video! Well narrated with a pleasant voice, with a wealth of expert knowledge! It also features stunning aerial shots of many natural landscapes and buildings.
die Stimme kann angenehm sein. – The voice can be pleasant. Unangenehm – unpleasant.
die Luftaufnahme – the aerial view. Die Videoaufnahme or die Fotoaufnahme – the video recording or photo. You might have probably seen a warning sign in some restricted areas like in airports – Photography/video recording prohibited -> Foto-/Videoaufnahme verboten.
As you are subscribed to any German-speaking channels on that platform, it makes sense to have a short look at users comments, find the most interesting, funny ones and try to translate them or use online vocabulary such as glosbe.
Remember, small practical things always bring bigger results in a long run. With that I am leaving that post and wish you persistent “language-building”. Bis bald, Freunde. Viel Freude🙂
