Ein Zug rollt nach San-Franzisko
Als der Zug sich in Bewegung setzte, kam Tom Parker zum Schaffner des Schlafwagens und fragte:
- ‘‘Stimmt es, dass unser Zug erst spät in der Nacht in K. ankommt?”
- ”Punkt 3.18 Uhr. Der Zug hält 2 Minuten.”
- ”Darf ich Sie bitten, mich zu wecken? Ich steige nämlich in K. um.”
- ‘‘Gut, wird erledigt.’’
- ”Ich muss Sie aber warnen, dass ich einen festen Schlaf habe. Wahrscheinlich werde ich schimpfen und toben. Achten Sie bitte nicht darauf, packen Sie mich am Kragen und schmeißen Sie mich mit meinem Koffer hinaus.”
- ”Wird erledigt” – brummte der wortkarge Schaffner.
Die Sonne stand hoch im Himmel und die Uhr zeigte halb elf, als Tom Parker in seinem Abteil aufwachte.
- ”Alles verpasst” – war sein erster Gedanke. Er sprang auf und lief zu Schaffner.
- ”Sie…”, schrie er wütend den Schaffner an, ”Sie’ Taugenichts! Wie kommen Sie dazu, Ihr Wort nicht zu halten!’‘
Er schimpfte und tobte eine gute Viertelstunde. Der Schaffner blieb aber seelenruhig.
- ‘‘Herr, Sie können brüllen, so viel Sie wollen,” sagte er. – ”es ist nichts im Vergleich zu dem, wie der Fahrgast schimpfte und tobte, den ich in K. hinausgeworfen hatte.”
A train rolls to San Fransisco
As the train began to move, Tom Parker came to the conductor of sleeping car and asked:
- Is it true that our train arrives in K. late at night?’
- Exactly at 3.18 am. The train stops for two minutes.
- May I ask you to wake me up. I change the train in K.
- Good, will be done
- But I must to warn you, I have a deep sleep. Probably I’ll rant and rave. Please pay no attention, grab me by collar and throw me out with my suitcase.
- Will be done – grumbled the conductor laconically
The sun stood high in the sky and the clock showed half past ten when Tom Parker has waked up.
- Everything missed – was his first thought. He jumped up and ran to conductor.
- You, he shouted angrily at the conductor. You, Good-for-nothing! How come, you don’t keep your word!
He ranted and raved for a good quarter hour. But the conductor remained calm.
- Mr., you can shout as long as you want, he said. – It’s nothing compared to the ranting and raving of the passenger I threw out in K.

Er sollte sein Wort halten. – He should keep his word.
