Hello friends,

best wishes to all of you. In today’s brief post we will learn German with music. I have found a nice text written by famous German singer Udo Lindenberg.

So, let’s begin right now.

Einmal um die ganze Welt

Einmal um die ganze Welt
und die Taschen voller Geld
dass man keine Liebe und kein Glück versäumt
Viele fremde Länder seh’n
auf dem Mond spazieren geh’n
davon hab ich schon als kleines Kind geträumt

Wenn man nur als Kind schon wüsste
was man tun und lassen müsste

Once round the whole world
with pockets full of money
so you never miss love or happiness
To see many foreign countries
to go for a walk on the moon
I dreamed of that ever since I was a little child

If only, as a child, one knew
what one ought to do and what one ought not to do, life would be easy.
Whether one eventually achieves
all distant goals and the most beautiful of feelings

Of the many illusions
that dwell in our hearts,
only few remain, and, as a miracle, one day they will sometimes come true

Once round the whole world
with pockets full of money
so you never miss love or happiness
To see many foreign countries
to go for a walk on the moon
I dreamed of that ever since I was a little child

Let us build interesting examples with the reference words. You might have probably noticed so-called “shrinking” words such as “seh’n“, “geh’n“, “wär’, “hab” which correspond to: sehen, gehen, wäre, habe. Don’t be affraid of them. The main thing is, the songs and poetry allow “unconventional” approach to make the texts sound better. Also in colloquial speech, this method is widely utilized.

Expanding our German vocabulary:

versäumen – to miss. -> Wenn man heute kleine Möglichkeiten versäumt, dann werden uns größere Möglichkeiten in der Zukunft nicht verfügbar. – If we miss small opportunities today, then bigger opportunities will not be available to us in the future.

träumen von (Dativ) – to dream of something. -> Sie träumen von einem glücklichen Leben. – They dream of happy life.

Wenn man … wüsste – Konjunktiv II of verb wissen to know. -> Wenn man wüßte, was er wirklich gemeint hat. – If only we knew what he really meant.

Ziele erreichen – to achieve goals. -> Nice noun-verb combination to learn:) See recent relevant post Noun&Verb. -> Wir alle wollen unsere Ziele erreichen – We all want to achieve our goals.

mitunter – sometimes, from time to time. Solid alternative to adverb manchmal. ->Seltsame Dinge geschehen mitunter in der Welt. – Strange things sometimes happen in the world.

Summing up our today’s “musical” post: texts for the songs may contain “shrinked” words (never use them while writing, especially at the exam.). Similar to poetry, translation into other language causes some inconsistency, e.g. it would be hard to sing the same song in English. Learning its texts offer alternative to “often-used” adjectives, adverbs etc. In our case it is adverb “mitunter“. If you like the music of other singers, that’s a proper reason to start learning original German texts. Udo Lindenberg texts are available under: Songtexte – Udo Lindenberg – offizielle Website

Finally, we’ve reached the end of the article. Vielen Dank für Eure Zeit, Freunde.

Take care.
