Hello friends,

I believe you are doing great. This time we will learn how to build sentenses with German verb “machen” – to make, to do. Obviously this is one of the most commonly used verbs in any language. German is not an exception.

First let us try to conjugate it in Present Tense.

Conjugation in Präsens

Ich mache
Du machst
Er, sie, es macht
Wir machen
Ihr macht
Sie machen

Sie machen (Sie -> polite form, see Siezen post)

Now it’s time to build the corresponding sentences.

Ich mache nun meine Hausaufgabe. – I am doing my homework now.

Du machst deinen Job richtig. – You do your job well.

Er macht alles. – He does everything.

Es macht nichts. – It doesn’t matter.

Wir machen ein Foto. – We take a photo.

Ihr macht schwierige Sachen leicht. – You (plural) make difficult things easy.

Sie machen einen großen Fehler. – They make a big mistake.

Conjugation in Präteritum

Ich machte
Du machtest
Er, sie, es machte
Wir machten
Ihr machtet

Sie machten (Sie, polite form is the same)

Ich machte meine Hausaufgabe. – I did my homework.

Du machtest deinen Job richtig. – You did your job right.

Er machte alles. – He did everything.

Es machte nichts. – It didn’t matter.

Wir machten ein Foto. – We took a photo.

Ihr machtet schwierige Sachen leicht. – You made difficult things easy.

Sie machten einen großen Fehler. – They made a big mistake.

In Perfekt the conjugation looks as following:

Ich habe gemacht
Du hast gemacht
Er, sie, es hat gemacht
Wir haben gemacht
Ihr habt gemacht
Sie haben gemacht

Ich habe meine Hausaufgabe schon gemacht. – I have already done my homework.

Du hast deinen Job richtig gemacht. – You have done your job right.

Er hat alles gemacht. – He has done everything.

Es hat nichts gemacht. – It didn’t do anything. OR It has done nothing. Here we have different meaning. In general it depends on the context the phrase is utilized. I prefer to use Present tense or Präteritum to say “It doesn’t matter“.

Wir haben ein Foto gemacht. – We have taken a picture.

Ihr habt schwierige Sachen leicht gemacht. – You have made difficult things easy.

Sie haben einen großen Fehler gemacht. – They have made a big mistake.

Important information: when translating from German into English, the sentences in Perfekt tense (German) are translated as Past Simple (English) as well. I have just made 1:1 translation, e.g. no “fixed” rule exists.

Er hat alles gemacht. – we can translate as “He did everything.” It is much better to look into the context. From the beginning it is hard, still personal practical experience solves all doubts. No need to worry about that.

At the final stage of this article, I would offer you few working phrases with this omnipresent verb.

Machen Sie es sich bequem! – Make yourself comfortable.

Mach mal langsam. – Slow down (you, informal).

Machen Sie sich keine Sorgen. – Don’t worry.

Machen Sie es gut. – Take care.

Mach dir keinen Kopf. – Don’t worry about that.

So far, our learning reached the end, at least for the given moment. I wish you all the best, my dear friends. Ohne Übung keine Ergebnisse. Remember that and act.
